[Satellite TODAY 04-26-10] Communications solutions provider BT has completed its first satellite terminal in Antarctica, the company announced April 23.
The terminal, Ice Station Troll, is part of the global network BT is deploying for Galileo, Europe’s satellite navigation system. The station aims to deliver improved accuracy and guaranteed positioning services. BT’s other sites are located on islands such as La Reunion, New Caledonia, Easter Island and Hawaii.
The terminal, which BT started developing in 2008 and completed in February, is part of the company’s contract extension with the European Space Agency for further deployment of a data dissemination network for the pilot phase of Galileo.
