[Satellite TODAY 03-31-10] KeyOn Communications Holdings, a U.S. provider of wireless broadband, satellite video and voice over IP services, has submitted multiple applications for $360 million of U.S. federal stimulus funding in the second round of the U.S. Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP), the company announced March 30.
BIP funding constitutes $7.2 billion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, has been allocated for distribution by the U.S. Department of Agriculture‘s Rural Utilities Service and the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration in three separate funding periods.
KeyOn said it submitted applications for the $1.7 billion available in the second and final round for last-mile infrastructure projects. KeyOn said that government funding would be applied to WiMax networks, which could expand to cover as many as 22 states and provide wireless broadband access to as many as 8.2 million people.
KeyOn’s proposed last-mile network design takes advantage of the newly regulated 3.65 GHz spectrum, outlined in the U.S. Federal Communication Commission’s broadband plan, for which it holds a nationwide license.
