[Satellite TODAY 03-04-10] Gilat Satellite Networks was awarded a contract by service provider Satcom Systems to provide a SkyEdge 2 broadband satellite network to serve several hundred small and medium enterprises throughout Africa with VoIP, video conferencing and virtual private network services, Gilat announced March 3.
    The network, which will include Gilat’s SkyEdge 2 hub in Germany, as well as hundreds of VSATs, will aim to enable Satcom Systems to expand its services in West Africa and launch a new service, Ku Plus, on Intelsat’s IS-14 satellite.
    “SkyEdge II’s low total cost of ownership allows us to broaden our scope to serve new markets, including the fast-growing African SME segment,” Satcom Systems Vice President of Africa Daniel Schapiro said in a statement.
