[Satellite TODAY 03-02-10] Stratos Global has been contracted by the BBC to provide the U.K. broadcaster with an Inmarsat BGAN X-Stream mobile broadband satellite service to broadcast live coverage of a charity event in the Amazon region, Stratos announced March 1.
The deployment of BGAN X-Stream to cover “Helen’s Amazing Amazon Adventure” represents BBC News’ first use of live 384-kilobits-per-second (kbps) video streaming from a remote location. The Stratos solutions aims to enable the BBC to stream video at a minimum symmetrical rate of 384 kbps, with up to 450 kbps expected under optimal conditions.
The video traffic will be routed via StratosNexus, the Stratos global IP network, into BBC’s television center in London. “Multiple, successful deployments such as this remote Amazon trek have helped Stratos become the preferred source for media organizations who wish to use BGAN, BGAN X-Stream and the Stratos Advantage to achieve optimal performance and efficiency,” Stratos President and CEO Jim Parm said in a statement.
