[Satellite TODAY 02-05-10] Stratos Global has been contracted to supply Inmarsat BGAN mobile satellite data and voice services to the University of California San Diego (UCSD) to support archaeological research in remote areas of Mongolia, Stratos announced Feb. 4.
Stratos’ equipment supplier ViaSat will donate its VRT-100 rugged BGAN terminal for UCSD’s project, which is supported by the joint National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program.
“Having access to BGAN from Stratos, with the rugged VRT-100 terminal, provides us with reliable connectivity in northeastern Mongolia’s‘Forbidden Zone, one of the world’s most remote regions. The service is playing a critical role in helping us maintain the highest levels of safety and productivity while in the field,” UCSD Researcher Albert Yu-Min Lin said in a statement.
