Verimatrix, a company best known for its deals in the IPTV content security space, has signed its first pure satellite content protection deal with a TV operator in Asia.
“The operator wanted to upgrade its content security platform to offer a more flexible and broader array of revenue generating services. We feel this deployment is significant because it proves software-based content security architecture can successfully extend into satellite networks,” Verimatrix CEO Tom Munro told IBC e-Daily.
The deal and deployment, yet to be formally announced, is a significant one Verimatrix as it looks to expand from its traditional IPTV roots.
The deal involves the deployment of Verimatrix’s VCAS cardless content security. They selected the Verimatrix solution because of our ability to manage a cost-effective and smooth transition of their current deployment and the future benefits that our software-based content security can bring across the full range of their distribution networks" Munro said. Not only are we helping to enable a variety of new revenue streams for the operator, we are addressing the challenges of loss of revenue through piracy, which is a main concern for any operator in the region.”
Munro is hopeful that Verimaxtrix can follow this win with other deals in the satellite arena. “Naturally, we are very optimistic as we are in conversations with other satellite operators and feel this deployment is a major proof point for our solution. This clearly marks a significant milestone for Verimatrix and the industry," he said.
Verimatrix primary business remains the IPTV sector, and the company recently announced deployments with VNPT in Vietnam and CANTV in Venezuela, among others.
“We are very proud of our leadership position in IPTV, yet we understand that our challenge is to penetrate more traditional pay-TV markets that are more familiar with smart cards," Munro said. "The move to interactivity is inevitable, which is underpinned by IP technologies. We feel our fresh approach and demonstrated expertise in IP positions us well to take advantage of this trend. We now have a growing list of DVB customers and anticipate an increase in activity in these areas.”
