[Satellite TODAY 09-15-09] Swedish on-demand TV server technology developer Edgeware has been selected by Dutch cable operator Caiway to provide the Orbit-2X video server platform to drive Caiway’s IPTV service, scheduled to launch in October, Edgeware announced Sept. 14.
The Caiway IPTV service is facilitated by its Dutch integration partner, Divitel.
“We chose Edgeware´s solution because it enables us to easily and quickly add advanced time-shifted TV service, including network personal video recording in the near future, and very cost-efficiently scale these services as the uptake and subscriber base grows,” said Aart Verbree, CEO of Caiway, in a statement.
Separately, Edgeware unveiled WTV-2G and Orbit-2G, a new line of video server appliances designed for gigabit networks, the company announced Sept. 13.
Based on Edgeware’s WTV-2X and Orbit-2X servers, the company’s 2G line aims to deliver the same unique built-in capability for time-shifting of live TV, network PVR and ad-insertion, as well as video on-demand (VoD) and Web TV services to the three screens.
Edgeware said the technology enables operators to scale their on-demand services even more aggressively, and allow service providers with limited core network capacity to benefit from Edgeware’s video server technology and expand opportunities within the hospitality segment.
“On-demand TV services create huge congestions in core networks and require the ability to organically distribute caching and streaming to any location, including access networks. The tiny, powerful Edgeware boxes work together as one logical cluster that is more deeply distributable into the network than anything on the market,” said Edgeware CEO Joachim Roos, in a statement.
