[Satellite TODAY 08-17-09] Australian DTH operator Foxtel had 125,000 subscribers for its HD service in Australia at the end of June, according to the operator’s full year results, released Aug. 13.
Foxtel launched its HD service in June 2008, and the adoption of the service has been slower than expected, the company said. Foxtel has had better luck with its PVR service, iQ. More than 40 percent of its managed subscribers are taking this service. Over the course of 2009, more than 75 percent of new Foxtel subscribers are taking either the iQ PVR or iQ2 HD PVR.
Despite the sluggish HD figures, the broadcaster’s revenues for the year reached $1.5 billion, an increase of 11 percent compared to the previous year. Foxtel ended the second quarter with 1.6 million direct and wholesale subscribers. The company’s managed subscribers increased by 110,000, about 8 percent, over the previous year. Wholesale subscribers for the year to the end of June fell by 15 percent.
