[Satellite TODAY 08-10-09] DirecTV’s second-quarter profits dropped 11 percent in the second quarter of 2009, as the company spent more money on customer acquisition, which offset revenue growth, according to financial results released Aug. 6.
DirecTV’s revenue improved 9 percent from $4.8 billion to $5.2 billion. However, earnings dropped to $407 million in the quarter from $455 million in the same quarter in 2008. DirecTV’s subscriber acquisition costs totaled $727 million in the quarter, a 15 percent jump from last year.
DirecTV added 224,000 net new subscribers in the quarter, a 74 increase from a year ago and expects to add 156,000 net subscribers in the third quarter.
Separately, DirecTV said it is still searching for a replacement for CEO Chase Carey, who left the company in June to join News Corp.
