[Satellite TODAY 08-07-09] Comcast Corp., the largest cable operator in the United States, lost 214,000 basic video subscribers in the first quarter of 2009, sending its total customer base below 24 million, according to the company’s financial reports released Aug. 6.
    Comcast said that competition from phone and satellite operators was a primary factor in the subscriber decline. Collins Stewart, a cable market analyst firm, expected Comcast to lose 165,000 subscribers.
    Despite the subscriber loss, Comcast’s second-quarter net profit rose to $967 million from $632 million in the same period last year. Revenues rose 4.5 percent to $8.9 billion, with average revenue per subscriber rising 7.4 percent to $117.7.
