After visiting multiple shows throughout the past several years, I am still amazed at the pace of change in the communications and broadcast arenas. We saw our second 3D HD demonstration in as many shows, this one by Panasonic. While HD content remains far from being the standard for broadcast entertainment, it is interesting that the search for the next big thing already is well underway.
However, the takeaway from Panasonic’s demo was that while 3D HD is an impressive technology, demand for any service still is driven by compelling content. The fact that something is broadcast in 3D HD alone is not enough to make it a compelling business proposition.
Likewise, we heard today that the Indian market could have thousands of TV channels available within the next few years. That’s a staggering number, but at the same time, how many of those channels can attract an audience large enough to meet the business case, and can a relatively low APRU pay-TV market like India sustain that number of channels?
