[Satellite Today – 1-25-08] ABI Research projects that there will be 462 million mobile TV subscribers around the globe in 2012.
The growth will be led by the Asia-Pacific region, which will see an increase in the number of mobile TV subscribers from 24 million in 2007 to more than 260 million by 2012, according to the study “Mobile TV Services,” released Jan. 24. High levels of penetration will occur in both Japan and South Korea, each a leading market in mobile video services, while China and India will both contribute significantly to the overall total.
Mobile TV could offer strong growth opportunities for satellite players. TU Media, the Korean operator, has its services based on the satellite-digital multimedia broadcasting (S-DMB) standard and is viewed as one of the pioneers in the mobile TV market.
In Europe, SES Global and Eutelsat have formed a partnership to explore playing a role in the mobile broadcasting market, while Alcatel Lucent is participating in a variety of digital video broadcasting–satellite services to handhelds trials with players such as ICO in the United States and Italian cellular operator 3 Italia.
