[10-16-07 – Satellite Today] OmniGlobe Networks Inc. has signed a 10-year contract to provide increased satellite bandwidth for a tribe of Native Americans outside of Quebec, OmniGlobe announced.
Under the $5.5 million contract, OmniGlobe will provide the bandwidth to Naskapi Imuub Inc, the Internet Service Provider for the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach. The bandwidth will allow the provider to offer services such as Voice Over Internet Protocol, videoconferencing, tele-education and virtual private networking services. OmniGlobe also will provide remote operational support and technology transfer to Naskapi’s technical staff.
This announcement follows the recent funding received by Naskapi Imuun under the National Satellite Initiative –Round 2. The program was introduced by Industry Canada in partnership with Infrastructure Canada and the Canadian Space Agency in October 2003 and is designed to fund the acquisition of satellite capacity and possibly ground infrastructure for satellite-based broadband projects in isolated and remote communities across Canada. Naskapi Imuun received Round 2 funding from Infrastructure Canada Component-Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund. This is OmniGlobe’s third mandate with the Naskapi Nation since 2006.
