[Satellite Today 07-24-08] Lockheed Martin delivered the core propulsion module for the third Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) military communications system six months ahead of schedule, the company announced July 24.
The core propulsion module contains integrated propulsion systems, panels and other components which maneuver the satellite during transfer orbit to its final location and conduct on-orbit repositioning maneuvers throughout the lifetime of the satellite. The integrated system was delivered to Lockheed Martin’s Space Systems facilities in California from its Mississippi Space & Technology Center.
Lockheed Martin is under contract to provide three Advanced EHF satellites and the mission control segment. Northrop Grumman Space Technology is the prime contractor for the U.S. Air Force’s AEHF program.
Separately, the Lockheed Martin-Northrop Grumman Transformational Satellite Communications System (TSAT) space segment team completed a demonstration of its new-generation High Power Hall Current Thruster electric propulsion system.
Developed by Lockheed Martin and Aerojet, the propulsion technology will improve fuel efficiency over conventional chemical propulsion systems and will be used for orbit transfer as well as on-orbit station keeping.
