 Corporations that oversee operations spread throughout the globe long ago realized the benefits of incorporating satellite-enabled technologies into their communications network. The mega-sized conglomerates use satellites to exchange critical information among different part of their organizations as well as with customers.
But as you will see in this issue of Satellite Business Solutions, size and maturity of operations does not make a difference when it comes to garnering the benefits of satellite communications. Satellite-enabled networks can be a boon to large-scale operations that need to be more efficient, operations that are just implementing satellite services and operations that are in a state of flux and trying to find the best mix of satellite and terrestrial technologies.
The efforts of BASF to implement a satellite-enabled virtual private network is a prime example of how global corporations continue to refine and improve their operations using satellite. The chemical giant was having problems moving data from remote sites to data centers, and BASF information technology personnel were able to solve the problem by working with satellite service providers.
A different scenario can be found with the efforts of IDC Comstock, which provides real-time market data solutions to the financial community. The company’s use of satellite to deliver its critical financial information has evolved with the industry as a whole, demonstrating how satellite solutions can provide a perfect complement to terrestrial solutions and adapt to meet a company’s changing communications needs.
The country of Afghanistan also provides a prime example for companies around the globe of how to introduce satellite technology into its operations. The war-torn country is using basic satellite connections to help rebuild its communications infrastructure in major cities as well as in rural areas. While terrestrial links will play a larger role in the future, it is satellite that is helping get the country’s communications infrastructure humming again, and satellites will play an important role for a long time.
