Among the global satellite chief executive officers, the components of business are always in flux. All would agree that access to reliable, affordable launch services is a priority. All would concur that robust spacecraft qualify as “must haves.” All would concede that they must be intimately aware of regulatory currents, spectrum allocations, and national and regional sentiments. All would endorse continued innovation on the earth segment side.
All would note that having enough capacity to serve current commitments, build business plans for future demand, and even step up to meet occasional surge requirements counts among their individual Top Five lists.
But these global satellite CEOs do have differences of opinion, sometimes narrow, frequently nuanced, and always of critical relevance to the rest of the marketplace. For one, Asia may be more important than South America. Another’s eyes may be on developing the developing world. One may be lining up his bets on future markets and evolving technologies while his peer thinks the best path to increasing profitability is flawlessly serving established constituencies.
Sometimes these various worldviews bring these CEOs into open conflict. The annual battleground of choice is the SATELLITE show. And this is where the most crucial of intangibles comes into play . . . the quality of leadership. The Big Four make joint appearances here and there during the course of the year, but nowhere else do they command the sheer numbers of key decision makers. SATELLITE is the stage upon which business plans are born, made, remade, and sometimes even broken. A few words from the global CEOs set the pace as well as the focus for near- and long-term planning across all disciplines.
Sample a single sound bite from just one giant: “Globalization of content and high definition are among the top growth drivers within our industry,” Intelsat CEO David McGlade told me last week. “We also see an increased demand for regional programming being transmitted into developing markets such as Africa and Central Asia.” In three dozen words, McGlade offers a revealing and actionable insight into where Intelsat sees the money.
He’s got a lot more to say, and his CEO colleagues – Romain Bausch, Giuliano Berretta, Dan Goldberg – won’t let themselves be outdone. Their words set the bar for global communications via satellite. They will be spoken at SATELLITE 2008.

Via Satellite Accepts Nominations for 2007 Satellite Executive of the Year
Each year at the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition, the staff of Via Satellite magazine and the Access Intelligence Satellite Group honors the most outstanding industry executive of the prior year as its Satellite Executive of the Year.
The honoree is chosen for durable contributions to the global satellite markets, technologies, business practices, services innovations or any combination of the aforementioned.
PanAmSat Founder Rene Anselmo was the first Satellite Executive of the Year in 1988. Since then, more than a dozen industry visionaries have been honored. Some honorees have been controversial; others have been obvious. In any case, it's always been invigorating to debate the merits of the nominees and to share conclusions with the global satellite community in Via Satellite and during the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition.
Submission deadline is Nov. 15, 2007 - Submit your nomination today!
World Teleport Association Accepts Nominations for its 2007 Top Operators Rankings

September 25 – How Serious Is The Threat To Satellite’s C-band Spectrum?
October 16 – What Steps Can The Industry Take As WRC-07 Gets Underway?
December 4 – What Should The Satellite Industry Do In The Aftermath Of The Decision Made By WRC-07?
Satellite operators use C-band to provide essential services such as TV transmissions, distance learning, telemedicine and disaster recovery, and in some countries C-band spectrum serves as the core communications network. But communications via satellite using radio frequencies around 4 gigahertz may face an interference threat from the rollout of mobile broadband technologies.
This is a key issue on the agenda for the ITU’s World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-07) and the satellite industry needs to be made aware of the situation.

Arianespace Receives Contract For Globalstar Second-Generation Constellation
Globalstar awarded a contract to Arianespace for the launch of Globalstar's second-generation constellation using Soyuz rockets, Arianespace announced Sept. 4.
Arianespace received a contract to perform four firm launches for Globalstar beginning in summer 2009. Each Soyuz vehicle would carry six of the second-generation satellites, which will weight about 700 kilograms apiece at launch.
Thales Alenia Space is manufacturing 48 satellites for Globalstar, and the Arianespace contract has an option for four additional Soyuz missions.
EMS To Design Next-Generation Inmarsat Phones
EMS Technologies Inc. signed an agreement to design the next-generation satellite phones for Inmarsat Global Ltd., EMS announced Aug. 22.
The EMS Satcom division will design the dual-mode phones will support terrestrial GSM and GMR-2+ satellite operation and will detect whether a user is in a cellular coverage area and, if not, automatically switch to the global satellite network.
"Developing this new satellite phone is an important opportunity for EMS," president and CEO Paul Domorski said in a statement. "We are evolving our proven mobile satellite communications technology for substantial new markets. These include corporate and small- to medium-sized enterprises as well as regional markets composed of individual users and remote field workers."
The design will allow Inmarsat to better manage the spot-beam allocations for the I-4 satellite. "The combination of the third I-4 satellite launch in early 2008 and this dual-mode handset will allow us to continue our planned roll-out on a global scale," Andrew Sukawaty, chairman and CEO of Inmarsat, said.
The contract is valued at about $26 million.
ITT Wins FAA's Air Traffic Modernization Contract
ITT Corp. was awarded a contract by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to lead a team to develop and deploy the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, the company announced Aug. 30.
The satellite-based program will replace the current system of ground-based radars and is a key component of the FAA's NextGen program, which is intended to increase safety and efficiency of the U.S. air transportation system.
Under the contract, which carries a value of $207 million for an initial three years of performance, ITT will be responsible for overall system integration and engineering. ITT and its team will deploy a nationwide air traffic control surveillance network consisting of field radio sites, data processing centers, network operations centers and equipment to enable delivery of GPS-enhanced surveillance data to air traffic control facilities. The system is scheduled to be commissioned by 2010 and fully deployed by 2013.
The contract includes options for operation and maintenance of the system through September 2025. If all options are exercised, the contract could be worth $1.9 billion.
ITT won the contract in a competition with Lockheed Martin Corp. and Raytheon co.
ND SatCom To Introduce New HD Systems
ND SatCom will add to its range of high-definition (HD) uplink systems by introducing a 750-watt high power amplifier, the company announced Aug. 30.
"We're providing a full range of HD uplink systems,"Ulrich Kiebler, NDSatcom's vice president government & commercial, said in a statement. "The most powerful set-up is a package which bundles our high-performance SkyRay MAS 1900 antenna subsystem with our recently developed 750-watt [high power amplifier]. With this package, we can cater to the most challenging customer demands and transmission needs, including live outside sports or event broadcasting."
