Thanksgiving is now a memory, and the holiday season looms ahead. For the global satellite-enabled marketplace, over the last few weeks successful launches of just about every rocket out there have shown a robust capability upon which operators everywhere rely.
News from the front lines of business development is also good.
“The fixed satellite services industry has largely recovered from the difficult period it experienced following the bursting of the telecom bubble,” reflects Telesat president and chief executive officer Dan Goldberg. “Supply and demand are now more closely aligned and rates for satellite capacity are stable to improving in virtually all regions of the world. For video, demand is principally coming from growth in direct-to-home satellite platforms in the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, driven by the increasing introduction of high definition television services, new channels and, in certain parts of the world, deregulation of the multi-channel video market. Network services also are growing for a variety of reasons, including increased use of commercial satellite capacity by government users, heightened exploration activities in the natural resource sector, and government and privately funded initiatives in developing parts of the world to improve access to basic and enhanced telecommunications services.
“We have witnessed significant demand over the past 24 months, principally in North America, for consumer-oriented broadband services via Ka-band satellite payloads,” Goldberg continues. “Our expectation is that this service will continue to grow rapidly in North America and, in part based on this success, will gain traction in the near future in Europe and elsewhere.”
Of course, even when it’s sunny, top CEOs are paid to ponder the future: “Perhaps our largest concern at this time,” Goldberg notes, “relates to the availability and cost of launch services, where manifests are quite full and prices have increased dramatically in recent years. On balance, however, the outlook for our sector is promising at this time and Telesat as well as other operators are well positioned to benefit from the current environment.”
Goldberg and his peers have at their command squadrons of market experts, on-ground specialists, technical gurus, financial wizards, and all the resources big business can assemble. But at SATELLITE 2008 you can go one better than that – you can have Dan Goldberg, his fellow global satellite systems operator CEOs, and hundreds of top executives, advisors and experts, all in one room, all in one week, all in Washington, DC, February 25-28.
Before the holiday season overwhelms us all, make plans now to join me there.

What Should The Satellite Industry Do In The Aftermath Of The Decision Made by WRC-07?
A Live Webinar –December 4th
Satellite operators use C-band to provide essential services such as TV transmissions, distance learning, telemedicine and disaster recovery, and in some countries C-band spectrum serves as the core communications network.
More than 160 satellites that use C-band are in orbit, representing an investment of more than $40 billion by the satellite industry.
Satellite operators have faced spectrum battles in the past, but huge telecommunications firms are lobbying to gain more access to C-band for their next generation wireless services. Find out what this means for satellite operators as well as their customers who rely on C-Band capacity.
By attending this live webinar you’ll:
· Find out the implications of the WRC-07 decision
· Learn who will be affected most by this decision
· Discover what’s next!
Plus, get your questions answered during this important program!

ProtoStar To Provide DTH Capacity For ISRO
ProtoStar Ltd. and Antrix, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), will jointly provide 216 megahertz of interim satellite capacity to support direct-to-home (DTH) television demand in India, the organizations announced Nov. 19.
ISRO and Antrix with use the transponder to bridge an expected shortage in capacity until a new Insat satellite becomes available. “The recent launches of Insat-4B and Insat-4CR have enabled ISRO to add 36 transponders within a space of six months. In order to further fill the gap in the demand, ISRO has also been adding transponders to the Insat system by leasing capacity from other regional partners from time to time,” K.R. Sridhara Murthy, executive director of Antrix, said in a statement.
For ProtoStar, the agreement allows it to use capacity its has leased from another provider until its planned launch of ProtoStar 1 in the 2008 second quarter and ProtoStar 2 in 2009.
“ProtoStar welcomes its new partnership with ISRO/Antrix as an opportunity to begin serving the high growth Indian DTH market at a critical point in its services expansion,” Philip Father, president and CEO of ProtoStar, said in a statement. “We anticipate that this interim agreement will be the beginning of a long and mutually productive relationship with ISRO and Antrix.”
The service is scheduled to begin in February.
Arinc, XipLink Partner For Aviation Broadband Services
Arinc has tested and deployed XipLink's embedded acceleration system in Arinc's Skylink broadband communications platform, XipLink announced Nov. 14.
The XipLink acceleration system combines SCPS-based acceleration with advanced data compression, quality of service and HTTP acceleration technologies. Engineers from Arinc and XipLink have been working to integrate the XipLink system with Skylink, starting with initial deployments in March.
The two companies will deploy XipLink in the airborne control system and the satellite ground stations that manage worldwide internet access, resulting in multi-megabit download rates to users.
FCC Grants Iridium Spectrum For MSS
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has allocated Iridium Satellite LLC exclusive access some L-band spectrum for global mobile satellite services, the company announced Nov. 15.
The FCC order, issued Nov. 9, gives Iridium exclusive use of 2.625 megahertz (MHz) of L-band spectrum which previously had been shared. Under the new ruling, Iridium will have exclusive assignment to 7.775 MHz of spectru, and will continue to share a 0.95 MHz segment.
"The FCC decision is clearly in the public interest," Matt Desch, chairman and CEO of Iridium, said in a statement. "As the fastest growing MSS provider, the additional spectrum will allow Iridium to continue to offer high-quality service to first responders, emergency workers, national defense and homeland security forces, and other enterprise verticals around the world. The FCC order provides direction globally, so Iridium will begin using the new spectrum immediately around the world."
