As this edition of Downlink arrives on your desktop, SATELLITE 2008 is less than four months away. For some, that’s an eternity, with holidays, the New Year, and January in between. But it’s never too early to sign up and make the commitment to accelerate your knowledge, your business . . . and your career. There’s always so much to learn!
Eutelsat CEO Giuliano Berretta phrases it this way: “Comparisons between a successful satellite broadcasting business and real estate have never been stronger. In both cases, location, cushioned by a virtuous circle of supply and demand, is a key success factor. In our satellite world, new terrestrial technologies bringing more applications and options to users in mobile and fixed environments are the greatest challenge to the FSS sector and the new neighbor we have to compete, or collaborate, with. Their emergence coincides with the inevitable and gradual filling up of the most interesting slots in geostationary orbit.”
Having cleverly weaved terrestrial competitors into the mix, Mr. Berretta continues, touching nearly every base in the marketplace mix.
“In this sort of scenario, necessity is the mother of invention,” he says. “We are compelled to optimize resources through more intelligent use of available spectrum. In parallel, the need to innovate with new space-based and ground-based technologies is taking center stage. While we continue to protect and exploit our Ku-band and C-band spectrum, S-band and Ka-band spectrum are transitioning from abstract ideas and theories into business cases supported by new broadcast and broadband applications. To match this, on the ground, there is fresh impetus on developing new solutions that ensure that satellite can be competitive to terrestrial.
“This makes the FSS sector an exciting place to be at the moment, giving us a new opportunity to be a market-maker and not just a market-follower after more than a decade of solid construction work of our famous neighborhoods.”
You are the ultimate market-maker. And the very best way to optimize your most precious resource – time – is to make a commitment to the future and join me and 8,000+ friends, colleagues, and competitors at SATELLITE 2008. Mr. Berretta and his CEO peers kick off the dialog on Tuesday morning, February 26. Please come prepared to ask your toughest questions.

Last Chance to Submit Your Nominations for 2007 Satellite Executive of the Year
Each year at the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition, the staff of Via Satellite magazine and the Access Intelligence Satellite Group honors the most outstanding industry executive of the prior year as its Satellite Executive of the Year.
The honoree is chosen for durable contributions to the global satellite markets, technologies, business practices, services innovations or any combination of the aforementioned.
PanAmSat Founder Rene Anselmo was the first Satellite Executive of the Year in 1988. Since then, more than a dozen industry visionaries have been honored. Some honorees have been controversial; others have been obvious. In any case, it's always been invigorating to debate the merits of the nominees and to share conclusions with the global satellite community in Via Satellite and during the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition.
Submission deadline is Nov. 15, 2007 - Submit your nomination today!

What Should The Satellite Industry Do In The Aftermath Of The Decision Made by WRC-07?
A Live Webinar –December 4th
Satellite operators use C-band to provide essential services such as TV transmissions, distance learning, telemedicine and disaster recovery, and in some countries C-band spectrum serves as the core communications network.
More than 160 satellites that use C-band are in orbit, representing an investment of more than $40 billion by the satellite industry.
Satellite operators have faced spectrum battles in the past, but huge telecommunications firms are lobbying to gain more access to C-band for their next generation wireless services. Find out what this means for satellite operators as well as their customers who rely on C-Band capacity.
By attending this live webinar you’ll:
· Find out the implications of the WRC-07 decision
· Learn who will be affected most by this decision
· Discover what’s next!
Plus, get your questions answered during this important program!

Inmarsat Signs Agreement With ESA For Alphasat Project
Inmarsat Global Ltd., a subsidiary of Inmarsat plc., has signed an agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to become the commercial operator for the Alphasat project, Inmarsat announced Nov. 8.
Alphasat is an ESA initiative for the development of Alphabus, a new platform capable of carrying a large communications payload. This new satellite will supplement the existing Inmarsat-4 satellites. The Alphasat satellite will provide service over Europe, the Middle East and Africa allowing the company access to a new allocation of L-Band spectrum across those regions. Concurrent with the award from ESA, Inmarsat Global Limited has entered into an agreement to procure the satellite from Astrium Satellites, a subsidiary of EADS. The satellite is scheduled to be completed early in 2012.
Bechtel, TerreStar Sign Agreement For Network Services
Bechtel Communications has signed an agreement to provide site development and program management services for TerreStar Network's ancillary terrestrial network, Bechtel announced Nov. 7.
Under the agreement, Bechtel will provide site acquisition and construction management services for the terrestrial component of TerreStar's next generation integrated satellite-terrestrial wireless network. Additionally, Bechtel will provide program management services to coordinate the overall design, installation, and commissioning activities of TerreStar's other technology and service partners involved in the network rollout. The network build-out is scheduled to take place over a two-year period.
Norsat Introduces X-Band Terminal
Norsat International Inc. has introduced a new X-band terminal, the company announced Nov. 6.
The GlobeTrekker X-Band terminal is available as a highly integrated system, which includes a 1-meter carbon fiber antenna, motorized feed assembly, Low-Noise Blocker, 35W X-band integrated block upconverter and solid state power amplifier, motorized azimuth/elevation superstructure, built-in inclinometer, compass, GPS; a baseband unit with a modem, spectrum analyzer, DVB-S receiver, Ethernet switch, DC-DC converter, shock protected chassis – a system controller including a wired display with software and a graphical user interface. The GlobeTrekker X-band terminal comes packaged in two ruggedized transit cases, the company said.
Northrop Grumman Wins Boom Patent
Five Northrop Grumman engineers received a patent for a payload positioning boom, the company announced Nov. 6.
The boom, which attaches the payload to the spacecraft, increases the ability of space telescopes to observe more of the sky by allowing a wider range of elevation angles.
The boom improves telescope performance and enables the use of a smaller sunshield by isolating the telescope from spacecraft vibrations and heat, and the boom's ability to move
the center of the satellite's mass minimizes fuel usage and tracking adjustments.
The boom will have application on NASA’s Signal Aperture Far Infrared telescope, which is scheduled to be launched between 2020 and 2025 as well as on the Terrestrial Planet Finder, which will use a coronagraph operating at visible wavelengths and a large-baseline interferometer operating in infrared to study planets outside
our solar system.
The work was funded by the company's independent research and development initiative to develop design concepts for future space observatories.
CVG Wins Coast Guard Communications Contact
CVG Inc. will provide a satellite-based broadband communications solution for the U.S. Coast Guard, CVG announced Nov. 6.
CVG will install a pair of Ku-band stabilized VSAT systems on Coast Guard vessels — one on each coast. The service will enable coverage to about 75 nautical miles offshore.
The contract was awarded under CVG’s contract with the U.S. General Services Administration’s Satellite Services-2 program.
