It would be pretty easy for me to bombard you with all the reasons why you have to be at SATELLITE 2008, and you know that I will. In this day and age, hardly a minute passes without the “pitch,” from one corner or another. We shout “can’t miss” and “must attend” in a chorus of well-scripted and thoughtful marketing outreach efforts.
Of course, nearly three decades in conference management, magazine and newsletter publishing, and the business of providing actionable intelligence, solid networking, and face-to-face, business-to-business connections in the satellite-enabled communications marketplace has given us a bit of an edge in knowing our customers. Here’s a snapshot:
- More than 50 percent of our conference attendees have been coming for more than three years, with scores of registrants having a decade or of participation more under their belts.
- A solid 77 percent are “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the number of conference sessions we offer.
- Two-thirds offer the same assessment for the relevance and timeliness of the sessions, and four-fifths proclaim the “overall value of the conference” with their highest ratings.
More to the point, perhaps, is what folks who have plopped down scarce corporate or personal cash to be there . . . a sampling of the comments, drawn from attributed remarks, includes these verbatim nuggets about the SATELLITE show:
- the most efficient way for me to gather information, acquire data and spec sheets, and make new contacts in a short period of time
- a great mix of service providers, customers, manufacturers, and government . . . the best satellite trade show I have attended
- vendors took the time to go the extra mile to explain their products
- lots of technology under one roof
- all the big bosses, all in one place . . .
We have a marketing campaign on tap for SATELLITE 2008 that will produce more than a million impressions. But from our perspective, the people we want to impress are reading this page right now. Come to SATELLITE 2008 and – while you learn, share, and meet your current and future business partners and friends – take a few moments to let us know how we’re doing.

Via Satellite Accepts Nominations for 2007 Satellite Executive of the Year
Each year at the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition, the staff of Via Satellite magazine and the Access Intelligence Satellite Group honors the most outstanding industry executive of the prior year as its Satellite Executive of the Year.
The honoree is chosen for durable contributions to the global satellite markets, technologies, business practices, services innovations or any combination of the aforementioned.
PanAmSat Founder Rene Anselmo was the first Satellite Executive of the Year in 1988. Since then, more than a dozen industry visionaries have been honored. Some honorees have been controversial; others have been obvious. In any case, it's always been invigorating to debate the merits of the nominees and to share conclusions with the global satellite community in Via Satellite and during the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition.
Submission deadline is Nov. 15, 2007 - Submit your nomination today!
SATELLITE 2008 is now 4 months away! Registration is open, the conference program has been finalized, and attendees and buyers are making their plans to travel to the event. Seventy-five percent (75%) of tradeshow visitors will travel to the event with a pre-determined agenda of suppliers they would like to connect with on-site. Getting on their “short lists” is an absolute must for exhibitors, and SATELLITE can help you make this important connection, both pre-show and on-site. To learn how the SATELLITE Conference & Exhibition can help you meet your sales and marketing goals, contact Michael Cassinelli, Exhibit Sales Manager today at (301) 354-1691 or mcassinelli@accessintel.com.

December 4 – What Should The Satellite Industry Do In The Aftermath Of The Decision Made By WRC-07?
On Demand – How Serious Is The Threat To Satellite’s C-band Spectrum?
On Demand – What Steps Can The Industry Take As WRC-07 Gets Underway?
Satellite operators use C-band to provide essential services such as TV transmissions, distance learning, telemedicine and disaster recovery, and in some countries C-band spectrum serves as the core communications network.
More than 160 satellites that use C-band are in orbit, representing an investment of more than $40 billion by the satellite industry.
Satellite operators have faced spectrum battles in the past, but with huge telecommunications firms lobbying to gain more access to C-band for their next-generation wireless services, satellite players may face their toughest spectrum fight yet.
This is a key issue on the agenda for the ITU’s World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-07) and satellite operators and their customers need to know how serious the threat to their C-band spectrum is and what the industry can do to protect its investment and revenue stream.

Benham Wins NASA Contract
Benham Companies LLC, a subsidiary of Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), has been awarded a $51.4 million contract by NASA to design, engineer and build two testing facilities, SAIC announced Oct. 16.
Benham will design and build a reverberant acoustic test facility, a 20-foot diameter mechanical vibration platform, a high-speed data acquisition system and control systems for the Orion spacecraft, which will carry astronauts to the International Space Station and the moon.
These two testing facilities and the other facilities being readied under separate efforts will allow the Orion spacecraft, consisting of the launch abort system and the crew and service modules, to undergo thermal-vacuum, acoustic, mechanical vibration and electromagnetic compatibility evaluations.
These facilities also will support NASA's Constellation Program's future spacecraft and other systems required for exploration missions to the moon, Mars and other destinations in the solar system.
WorldView-1 Acquires First Images
DigitalGlobe has revealed the first images from WorldView-1, the company announced Oct. 15. WorldView-1’s images include half-meter shots of Houston, Yokohama, Japan and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, all acquired since the beginning of October.
The satellite, built by Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. with the imaging sensor provided by ITT Corp., was launched Sept. 18 and has been undergoing routine calibration and check-out. Once operational, the spacecraft will be able to collect up to 750,000 square kilometers per day of half-meter imagery.
"The quality and resolution of WorldView-1's first images is demonstrative of the superior level of imagery and geospatial information we expect to deliver to our customers," Jill Smith, CEO of DigitalGlobe, said in a statement. "Knowing that the satellite continues to undergo final calibration in the coming weeks, we expect the quality of WorldView-1's imagery to improve even more."
