Sea Launch Sends Galaxy 19 into Orbit

[Satellite Today 09-24-08] Sea Launch delivered the Galaxy 19 satellite into orbit for Intelsat, the launch provider announced Sept. 24
TheZenit-3SL rocket lifted off at 5:28 am EDT from the Odyssey launch platform, and the Block DM-SL upper stage inserted Galaxy 19 into geosynchronous transfer orbit. Operators at the Hartebeesthoek ground station in South Africa acquired the first signals shortly after spacecraft separation.
Galaxy 19, built by Space Systems/Loral, is based on a 1300-series platform and carries 52 transponders to provide coverage of the United States as well the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico. It will be located at 97 degrees West.
“Once operational, Galaxy 19 will host the largest international video programming platform in North America, providing distribution of news and entertainment to our customers who serve the ethnically diverse audience of this region,” Inteslat CEO David McGlade said in a statement. “Likewise, Galaxy 19 will offer our government and network customers seamless data communications for years to come.”
